Prefix Private Registration Plates

Prefix number plates are a popular and eye-catching style of vehicle registration. They were issued between 1983 and 2001, and the prefix indicates the year of registration. The first letter on the plate signifies the year in which the vehicle was registered, followed by a unique combination of numbers and letters. Prefix plates have become highly sought after due to their distinct design and age-related significance. Additionally, they offer personalisation options for drivers looking to add a unique touch to their vehicles.

The registration plates comprise three letters, one to three numbers, and a final letter indicating the year of registration, starting with "A" for 1963, "B" for 1964, and so on. If you are interested in purchasing a suffix private plate, you can utilise our easy-to-use suffix plate builder that provides instant results at an unbeatable price. Current Style Car Registrations

The existing style of number plates is made up of seven characters. It starts with two letters, followed by a two-digit number and ends with three more letters. These registration plates can still be used to spell out words, for example: DE51 RED. This type of new number plate allows for a much larger number of combinations compared to the previous versions that were available before 2001. However, the letters "I" and "Q" are not allowed, but the letter "Z" can appear as part of the last three characters.

CNDA - the Cherished Numbers Dealers Association, RMIF - the Retail Motor Industry Federation

The Cherished Numbers Dealers Association (CNDA) & The Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMIF)

The Cherished Numbers Dealers Association (CNDA) is the Cherisished Numbers department of the Retail Motor Industry Federation and was established in 1971 to represent reputable and responsible dealers of personalised and attractive registration number and to protect the interests of their customers. CNDA is today affiliated to the Retail Motor Industry Federation whose various federated associations represent almost every sector of the retail motor industry.

Members of the CNDA adhere to a strict Code of Practice, and each member is regularly monitored by the Association to ensure that, for instance, members do not advertise registrations that they cannot be reasonably certain of supplying and that transfers are complete within an acceptable time limit. CNDA member dealers have a proven reputation and, in the unlikely event of a problem or dispute, help is close at hand from the CNDA.

The Association exists to:
» Increase awareness of the cherished number industry
» Promote and protect member businesses
» Develop and maintain standards in the sector
» Provide a channel for communication and information
The CNDA offers advice to consumers about the legal status of cherished numbers and ways in which to protect entitlement to them.

Through its Rule Book and Advertising Code the Association aims to ensure good business practices amongst its members and to maximize customer satisfaction.

The Association seeks to promote member businesses through its own website, regular advertising in the trade journals, a pre-recorded information line and the provision of literature.

Applications for membership are subject to formal procedures and review by the Association's Executive Committee.

The CNDA works closely with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency and with the DVLNI to promote the interests of its members and the industry by constantly reviewing the statutory requirements for the cherished transfer and retention schemes with a view to introducing greater flexibility in procedures.

Further publicity attaches to the Association through the operation of a certificated valuation service for registration numbers. CNDA valuations are acceptable for legal, insurance and fiscal purposes.
